Broderie Hollandaise hat & mitts

My own dutch-style versions of the classic broderie anglaise stitch pattern, Broderie Hollandaise stitch patterns combine lattice and eyelets in a whole new way.

The hat has a smooth hem inside and a purlwise stitch pattern around the band, followed by a knitwise pattern which tapers at the top to a seven-petaled flower - pretty!

Hat is worked to a beanie length, but could easily be made shorter as a cap.

Fingerless mitts use a similar stitch pattern worked at a smaller scale, with a thumb that is part welt, part flap, for a lovely and comfortable fit.

Stats for hat

Sizes: Ribbing is 1.5" around, hat is 21" around and 10" tall.

Yarn: 2 skeins Sunday Knits 5 ply (light worsted weight yarn: 137 yd /125 m to 1.75 oz / 50 g): Eden (merino), Nirvana (merino & cashmere), Angelic (merino & angora) or Brigadoon (merino tweed). Shown in Nirvana delft.
Substitute any wool or wool blend yarn that works nicely to gauge: 210 yds / 190 m.

Needles & Notions: Circular needle (circs) US size 6 / 4 mm for band and 8 / 5 mm for hat, double-pointed needles (dpn) size 8 / 5 mm for crown, and a second set of circs in size 6 (or a smaller size) for joining hem to hat. For both sizes, pointy-tipped needles are recommended; stitch marker, tapestry needle. Adjust needle sizes if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Gauge: 20 sts and 27 rows = 4" in St st on smaller needles. Two pattern reps (6-10 sts per rep) = 3" on larger needles.

Techniques used: Provisional cast on, 3-needle join for hem, knit- long and knit-below stitches.
